2008 pinot noir - santa lucia highlands - lone oak vineyard

we are quite excited about this our first-ever wine from a hillside vineyard of the santa lucia highlands.  lone oak vineyard saw late summer heat spikes give way to a september cool down for a mid-october harvest.  great ripeness had us thinking this would be a soft, lush wine but it surprised us with a nice firm tannin edge that should keep the wine interesting for several years in the cellar.

2006 syrah - santa barbara county - white hawk vineyard

cool temperatures through october led to a november harvest in 2006 with beautiful natural acidity in the fruit.  the long hang time produced full flavors in the grapes but limited stem ripeness led us to destem all clusters for fermentation.  aged in french oak, 25% new, for 17 months gave the wine a yummy sweet spice aroma without covering the deep, peppery and smoky fruit.   An ageworthy syrah that pairs nicely with full-flavored dishes.

"...blackberry jam, cherry liqueur and dark chocolate flavors that finish with pepper and cinnamon." - 91, Wine Enthusiast

2007 pinot noir - anderson valley - hein vineyard

august 2007 was mostly warm in anderson valley then september cooled nicely allowing the grapes to ripen slowly for a late september pick with plenty of natural acidity.  this wine shows classic anderson valley red cherry and berry notes with a nice background earthiness that begs to be paired with a mushroom dish - pork roast with morels comes to mind or perhaps a thin-crust pizza e funghi.

"spicy, dusty cherry flavors with some herbal, clove notes; silky texture; good structure and balance..." - 90, PinotReport

2006 cabernet sauvignon - napa

for this our first cabernet sauvignon we started with a high altitude howell mountain vineyard for a complex mix of herbs, spice, tobacco and cedar.  small amounts of napa benchland and valley floor cab fill out the wine a tad as do dashes of merlot and malbec.  the result? enough structure to stand some cellar aging and a fine match with grilled rack of lamb or bison steak.

2007 pinot noir - sta. rita hills - la encantada vineyard

a model of sustainable farming, la encantada was the first vineyard in santa barbara county to get the california certified organic farmers' stamp of approval back in 2000.  look for bright acidity, tangy berry flavors and structured tannins that the santa rita hills region is known for.  the most age-worthy of our current release wines, word to the wise is to have enough to hold a bottle or two back for thanksgiving dinner  2011.  and 2012.

"...good structure and balance; long finish.- 89, PinotReport

2007 chardonnay - mendocino - alder springs vineyard

for our first white wine we chose to work with alder springs vineyard: a consistent producer of great chardonnay grapes that lend themselves to unique, interesting wines.  fermented and aged in mostly-neutral French oak, this full-bodied wine shows bright, pure fruit balanced out with minerality and just a kiss of creaminess.  think honeycrisp apples with subtle hints of pineapple and acacia. terrific with fried calamari or anything alfredo.

"This is a very fine chardonnay..." - 93, Wine Enthusiast

2007 pinot noir - russian river valley - bohemian vineyard

we were excited to add this small family-owned vineyard to our collection for 2007.  the russian river valley gets enough bright sunshine to bring pinot noir to its full ripening potential - the twist with bohemian vineyard is that it sits on the western edge of the russian river AVA where the coastal pacific ocean chill contrasts sharply with the warm days.

"Shows the plush ripeness of this vintage..." - 93, Wine Enthusiast

2006 pinot noir - anderson valley - hein vineyard

the season ended cool in 2006 allowing us to harvest in stages and make a very sophisticated wine showing a subtle range of fruit, earth and spice aromas and flavors.  with bright acidity and velvety tannins you will be very happy sipping this charmer over a 2 hour dinner.

"Flinty minerality joins snappy wild berry and black cherry fruit that's fresh and zesty..." - 90, Wine Spectator

2005 syrah - santa barbara county - white hawk vineyard

hangtime was the word for these grapes as they matured slowly before finally getting harvested in november.  maybe it was all that time to grow up and get serious that led to such a big bad syrah - dark, rich and brooding with hints of smoke and pepper.  not to worry though - there is a bold fruit core too and the french oak barrel aging for 20 months contributed some nice spice flavors and aromas.

"...ripe flavors of blackberry jam, cassis, cherry liqueur, melted  dark chocolate, violets and a wonderful applique of cedar..." - 93, Wine Enthusiast
